Haroun and the Sea of Stories

There was once, in the country of Alifbay, a sad city, the saddest of cities, a city so ruinously sad that it had forgotten its name. It stood by a mournful sea of glumfish, which were so miserable to eat that they made people belch with melancholy even though the skies were blue.

This book is a beautiful fairy tale à la Rushdie. Full of curious turns of phrase, marvelous imagery, and otherworldly childhood adventures, it is also drenched in two of my favourite things: stories and the sea. I am powerless before it.
